Our goal for this project was to create a pergola that reduces sun exposure while maintaining airflow. We worked with the homeowner to design a grid-like pattern that blocks direct sunlight but still allows natural light and ventilation.
By carefully planning the size, orientation, and spacing of the rafters, the pergola provides ample shade for grilling, dining, and relaxation during even the hottest Knoxville afternoons.
Properly Anchor the Pergola
For a sturdy and long-lasting structure, each pergola post must be securely anchored. In this project, we:
Removed the pavers under each post
Dug 12-inch-deep holes for concrete footings
Anchored the posts in reinforced concrete
This method ensures the pergola remains stable during high winds, heavy use, and seasonal weather changes, while protecting the integrity of the new pavers around it.
